polar bear snow den | 24 June 2025 |
Hans, Guido and Karein went for a fun walk to Stuphallet. On their way they saw a big hole in the snow with hair from reindeer. They immedeately thought of a polar bear and stayed away, but made a photo from a distance. The Norwegian Polar Institute confirmed that the den had been used by a tracked polar bear mother with one young. The polar bear mother has a neck collar with a GPS device, which links to a satellite. They know exactly where the bear is. It was alreadfy seen quite regularly in Kongsfjord, but at present she is on Prins Karlsforlandet. Polar bears are more often seen, hunting for reindeer (see here)   Sightings of this bear with one cub in Kongsfjorden since my arrival on 10 June 2025 20250611 Storholmen 20250612 Prins Heinrich 20260613 airport coast 20250619 Ossian Sars The last sighting was from a large distance and is not confirmed as the same bear with one cub. | |
