geolocators on arctic terns | 25 June 2025 |
Frigg Speelman has joined us for two weeks and focussing on catching arctic terns and attaching geolocators. The geolocators will reveal the migration to Antarctica as long as we can catch the bird in the next year. We received the geolocators from the Norwegian program SEATRACK, though I started with geoloactors after a successful crowdfunding at the University of Groningen. If arctic terns attack, to protect their nest, they are not only hitting your head, but they also dive-bomb with their faeces. For us a possibility to collect information on their diet. ![]() One tern caught despite the defence of its partner. ![]() Careful notes ![]() Attaching a geolocator ![]() Release ![]() Collecting faeces for investigating food Fantastic pictures by Esther Horvath. |
