Second goose catch | 28 July 2026 |
There are hardly any geese around Solvatnet. There are far to many young foxes and their parents. So for the second catch, we go to Storholmen. Logistically and from safety risk a difficult place. On the first picture you see the hut on Storholmen in the background.
 We start with a nice group. I don't plan to catch more than 50. But we meet a lot of geese while bringing the geese to the net at the north side of the island. Finally, we catch 121 geese: 66 adults and 55 juveniles. In our previous catch we needed 6 minutes per goose. That would make the needed time to process all much to long and dangerous.  We focus on ringing and not on measuring and weighing to reduce the time for the whole operation. The birds get a colour ring and a metal standard ring. Susanna Garcia Espada is helping us and carries the geese from the catch pen to the ringing and back to the holding pen. | |
