great skua

30 July 2025

A great skua is an impressive big seabird, which behaves as a bird of prey. While we are studying geese, a skua steals the show.

We have placed cameras on Storholmen in the area of goose nests to determine goose grazing pressure. One camera registered a lot of activity by a pair of great skuas.

One of the breeding pair has been marked for the program SEATRACK. It caries a colourring yellow NC and a GPS logger. With this program, we want to follow seabirds to learn about their winter distribution at sea.

The great skua is hunting for other birds. On the island we find several carcasses of both common eider and barnacle geese. I have seen them hunting for moulting barnacle geese. They work as a pair. First in dividing a victim from the flock and than they land on the back of the victim, until they fall off and the partner takes ovcer immedeately. Until the goose has drowned. A gosling is easier prey, but the parents defend succesfully.

And suddenly a young of the great skua appears in front of the camera. The young is also ringed with a colourring: yellow JZ.
