catching terns | 5 July 2025 |
|
I received from Ariane Herbaut, station leader of AWIPEV, a nice photoseries of catching an arctic tern. |

We have placed a trap on the nest, with a small line over the eggs. If the bird touches the line a trigger mechanism is released and a net flies over the bird. Now we wait.... Through our binoculars we see that the tern is weary. Finally, the bird catches itself.

![]() We take measurements of the bird: wing length, headlength, billlength, billheight and bodymass. ![]() ![]() Carlijn will release the bird. | |

| The bird does not want to leave... and Auriane is too late when the bird flies away. | |
