Ossian Sars | 30 julie 2026 | Ossian Sars is a spectacular place. It has the biggest bird cliff in the fjord, which is good approacheable from above and many tall plant species, because this was the warmest spot on Svalbard. A south-facing cliff and two mountains on the other side a large glacier field. Also on the cliff side, the glaciers used to be close, and the cold air made the clouds disappear. We go to the cliff with a steep walk on the back side. You can sit close to the birds with kittiwakes and murres. The kittiwakes are taking over the cliff, while the murres are in a steep decline. The shift from polar water to atlantic water with less fish has caused the declining numbers. |

A polar dandilion is quite rare on Svalbard: Taraxacum brachyceras. Piet Oosterveld was always interested in this species and hoped to proof that it was brought to Svalbard by 17th century Dutch whalers. Arnica Arnica alpina has many names in English: mountain tobacco, leopard's bane and wolf's bane.  I think thuis is Potentilla chamissionis, but the picture ius not good enough to check that. The last part of our return trip is a climb through a canyon towards the coast.  | |
Ossian Sars | 30 July 2026 | Ossian Sars is een prachtige plek. Vanwege de grote vogelklif, die goed benaderbaar is en de vele plantensoorten, die er voorkomen omdat het lang één van de warmste plekken op Spitsbergen was. De gletsjers waren vlakbij en de wolken losten vaak op, door hun koude nabijheid. Via een omweg achterlangs, komen we bij het plekje, waar de vogels vlakbij op de klif zitten. Drieteenmeeuwen en dikbekzeekoeten. De drieteenmeeuwen doen hun Engele naam eer aan met hun roep kittiwake. Zij nemen nog steeds toe in aantallen op deze klif. De dikbekzeekoeten nemen daarentegen sterk af en lijken last te hebben van de verschuiving in het fjord van polair water naar atlantisch water, met minder vis. |

| Een paardebloem is op Spitsbergen zeldzaam: Taraxacum brachyceras. Piet Oosterveld was erg geïnteresseerd in deze soort en had graag bewezen dat ze hier gebracht waren door Nederlandse walvisvaarders. Wolverlei of ook wel Valkruid genoemd vanwege zijn medicinale werking na valpartijen Arnica alpina is in Nederland heel zeldzaam. I think Potentilla chamissionis, die is familie van de Nederlandse ganzerik. Tenslotte lopen we terug naar de kust door de canyon. | |
