hybrid grass

18 August 2024

Kristine Bakke Westergaard, curator of vascular plants at NTNU, discovered a lot of flowering grass for which she was specifically searching. This plant was only known from Prins Karls Forlandet and Ny-Ålesund. In Prins Karls Forlandet she did not find it anymore. In Ny-Ålesund , there was a description of 6 stands. In 2009 she found only 10 flowering shoots in one of the goose exclosures, but this year there were over 50 flowering shoots in the two lowest exclosures on Thiisbukta. These exclosures were erected in 2002 and maintained since then. I did not know this species, but Lise Fives also mentioned this species in Thiisbulkta.
The name is Arctodupontia sclerocloada, and it is seen as a hybrid between Dupontia fisheri and Arctophila fulva. Kristine has collected some samples for DNA analysis to better underpin the hybridisation.
It is still surprising that the three exclosures on higher groound in Thiisbukta changed into a monoculture of Equisetum scriptoides
