  Hugh Ellis van de Universiteit van San Diego in de Verenigde Staten meet de stofwisseling van drieteenmeeuwen. Als de kuikens 15 dagen oud zijn, meet hij over een periode van twee dagen de energie uitgave met behulp van dubbelgelabeld water. Daarna meet hij gedurende vier uur het rust metabolisme door het zuurstofgevruik en de koolzuurproductie te meten. Ze gaan de energieuitgave koppelen aan vervuiling en hormoonspiegel.

Op de achtergrond maken de pompen veel teveel lawaai, maar betere geluidsopnamen heb ik niet.
